I'm really excited about this upcoming year! I have a lot of personal goals as well as art related goals that I want to work towards and accomplish during the next 12 months in 2018.
Like most people, I tend to get really pumped and enthusiastic about making goals for myself with every intention on making them happen in the moment. More often then not however, I get sidetracked by other opportunities and/or meaningless distractions that come into my life…
I am the kind of person who dives head first into a project and will push away everything else and work tirelessly to make it happen. In the past several months I have been working on some personal websites, including my new blog that I will share with you in the near future. Unfortunately, while working on all of these extraneous projects I have neglected being diligent about creating art and taking care of other personal goals that I feel strongly about, like becoming healthier, stronger, spending more time with loved ones etc.
Long story short, I've been distracting myself from what is truly important and I have suffered for it. Although I gain massive amounts of knowledge and work tirelessly, it seems that it is never enough. I've realized recently that I feel this way because I've been focusing and acting on the wrong things. The REAL things that have always brought me fulfillment and joy include creating artwork, sharing experiences and being the best version of myself possible.
I want to spend more time on the things that better my life (especially art), and cut out the unnecessary crap that tends to get in the way. The time for excuses is over, and I am ready to go full force into what I believe will truly make an impact on my life and those around me.
Without further ado, here are my art goals for 2018!
Create Every Single Day
This is a big one for me. Moving forward I want to create something every single day. Creating art is a form of meditation and realization for me. Every day that I create, my mind seems to be more peaceful and centered.
Going forward I want it to be built into my everyday life as a habit instead of waiting until I feel "inspired" to do so. Even if I can only get one layer of a drawing in, or just a few informal sketches, it is important for me to work consistently if I want to be effective and feel a sense of everyday fulfillment.
Improve drawing ability
I love improving every aspect of my life, and drawing is one of the things at the top of my list and something that has meant a lot to me since I was young. I desire to be able to create anything I can imagine, but I need to improve my drawing skills for this to work effectively.
Creating everyday will help me to develop drawing abilities and technical skills that will assist me in communicating with others better through imagery as well as give me a feeling of satisfaction that comes with pursuing mastery.
Improve color mixing ability
I love color! Sometimes I find myself shying away from color palettes that I want to try out because I don't have full confidence in my ability to mix colors well and consistently. I want to play around more with color and work towards being able to color match and mix colors in a more consistent manner.
Improve technical printing skillsI want to get better at the process of printmaking. Especially in lithography, technical skills are a must. Even if I manage to create the most amazing image ever, if the technical etching and printing skills aren't there, the image will look nothing like what it is supposed to. Lithography in particular is a very finicky process, and I love it for that reason. A lot of things need to come together seamlessly to create amazing prints, and through reading, research, learning and experimentation, I know I can push myself to improve these skills immensely.
*I have been away from the studio for 8 months now and it has effected my ability to create prints as often as I was. Without all of the printing equipment, it is not possible to make lithographs for now, but I want to make the best of this time and grow in other ways while I wait to get back into a studio setting.
Until I can get back in the studio, I am going to work towards goals related to increasing my drawing and color mixing abilities as well as explore imagery, ideas and concepts through painting and hopefully some woodcuts (since I do have some access to an etching press).
Post a blog post every other Monday on HozroPrinthshop.com
I love to share the process of printmaking as well as other art related topics. By sharing on a set schedule, I will be able to talk about all of the things that are important for me to share with you. I will also be able to expand my audience at Hozro Printshop and provide more and more value for my followers.
Grow the Hozro Printshop Instagram and other social channels
It is my goal to grow my Hozro Printshop Instagram to at least 3,500 followers by the end of the year so I can share my work with a growing audience. I also want to push my other social accounts like Facebook and Pinterest, but for now Instagram will be my main focus. Beyond this, I wish to interact with more followers and fans of my work to build relationships with people from all over.
Learn, Learn, LearnI love constantly learning and evolving in every aspect of my life. Art, health, mindset, nonduality, personal development, minimalism and working for myself are all things that I want to continue to learn about and grow from. All of these seemingly unrelated topics influence myself as a person as well as my artwork.
In order to this I plan to put time aside everyday for reading and/or watching informative videos about what matters to me and what I know will make my life more balanced, fun and fulfilling.
And that is it for now! I might add more goals throughout the year depending on how these pan out, but for now I want to keep it pretty simple and feasible.
I know a lot of these goals, especially the technical and drawing skills are going to take me years to develop to the point I want to be at, but this process already has and will continue to teach me patience and humility as I move forward into uncharted territory. I'm super pumped to document the climb and share my journey with you as I make these things a reality.
